Qik is a service that works with s60 handsets and gives them the ability to stream live video from the handset to the Qik website where it can be viewed by anyone in real-time, well there is a slight delay but it’s as close to real-time as we can get with a modern mobile phone. Firstly you need an account with Qik, it’s in alpha testing at the moment so you cant just sign up and start using it straight away, you have to request an account and wait until they get back to you to say you have been accepted, this usually takes about 1-2 weeks. Once your request has been accepted the next step is to install the application on your phone and activate it with the code that they gave you. It’s as simple as that, you can now start live streaming video to the internet.
There are a few settings that can be changed within the application, you can change the quality of the video, enable or disable sound and select whether you want the video to be private or public. You can give your video a title before you start filming, or you can choose to title it once the streaming has finished. This is good for those times when you want to capture a moment quick as it’s happening without messing about deciding what you’re going to call it first.
I signed up with Qik a month back but didn’t get much chance to use it, and then I had a problem with my phone and needed to format it. After the format I was unable to activate it with the original code I had been given. I’ve not got it working again and shot a quick video the other day of a couple of swans as I was walking along a local stream. This was recorded using medium quality, high quality will give you a video size of 640×480.
