2 Days With The N95 8GB

February 4, 2008

I’ve had my N95 8GB now for just over 2 days so I thought Id do a write up of my impression so far. I could sum it up in one word and just say WOW! but ill go into a bit more detail than that. I still haven’t finished installing all the applications that I want but what I have installed on it so far are, Best Profiles, Y-Browser, Route 66, RotateMe, Nokia Sports Tracker, Task Manager, Screenshot, Google Maps and Reboot.

I haven’t used the camera much so cant really comment on that but I am very pleased with the quality of the few pictures I taken so far. The battery life is as I expected it to be, not bad but not fantastic. That may change though and improve once the new phone novelty has worn off and I’m not constantly using it every second of the day. A few things that I do and don’t like about it are:

Likes:-
A regular headphone port and Nokia Podcasting.
I’ve used this before on my n80 and n73 but having to use the pop port for headphones was such a pain as after time the connector gets a bit loose and the slightest movement and the audio would either stop or only come out of one ear. I use Nokia podcasting with Best profiles, I have a profile set to activate the podcasting application at 2am each day and update every hour via WIFI, so when I wake up in a morning any new Podcasts have been downloaded and ready to listen on my walk to work.

Nokia Sports Tracker and GPS.
I’ve only used this once to try it out. It works well with the built in GPS and I like the amount of detailed stats you get from each workout. The GPS is great, it locks onto satellites much quicker than I had imagined, usually just over 30 seconds after starting an application that uses it (sports tracker, nokia maps, route 66).

The amount of RAM.
This is a big plus for me. On my previous phones if I had more than about 4 applications open the amount of free ram would drop down to about 2 and applications would shut down if I opened any more. The amount of ram in this phone is amazing. I can have Skype, Music Player, Sports Tracker, Route 66, RotateMe and Web Browser all running and my free ram is still 63, plenty to have loads more applications running.
Things I dont like.

The screen saver.
Who at nokia decided it would be a good idea to have the screensaver run in landscape mode only, that person wants sacking. Its the most stupid idea they have ever had. When I have my phone out on the desk its usually in a charging stand so to look at the time or see if I have any missed calls or messages I have to tilt my head to look at the screen. When I pull my phone out of my pocket its usually upright as that’s how the phone is held 99% of the time so I have to turn it to check the time or missed calls/messages. Landscape screensaver is an ingenious idea, give that person a P45.

Cant deactivate screen rotation.
When you open the slider to view the music controls the screen switches to landscape mode. Just because I’ve slid the slider up doesn’t mean I always want landscape mode. With rotateme a quick turn of the phone and everythings back to normal. The trouble is then when you close the slider it changes the screen orientation to the oposite of whatever your using, so it goes back to landscape and I have to use rotateme to get it back to normal. It would be nice if it could be deactivated and I could just rely on RotateMe to give me the orientation I require.

That’s it for dislikes, Ive’ only found those two so far.
I’m very pleased with the phone and it lives upto and in some cases exceedes my expectation. This post was typed up on the N 95 8GB using the Nokia bluetooth keyboard and posted to vox via email, the photo was taken using an N73.
